Customers with Solar PV and battery storage have the unique ability to charge up from the electrical grid whenever energy prices are at their lowest (during 2am and 6am). They can then take their homes/businesses off the grid, running on the battery when prices are at their peak.
Octopus Energy currently offer a great tariff called “Agile”, whereby they track the wholesale price of electricity. So when energy prices are at their lowest, you will charge the battery. There are even times when the price of electricity drops so much that it goes into negative figures, which means Octopus are paying it’s customers to use electricity!
How much could you save?
By combining a Solar PV System, battery storage and Octopus agile tariff, you could reduce your energy bills by over 85% and all your electric will come from renewable energy! You win and the environment wins. https://www.givenergy.co.uk/octopus

- Retail businesses benefit from EV charging stations, as they motivate customers to stay and browse for longer with straightforward parking facilities that can simultaneously provide charging benefits. Longer browsing increases the shopping basket.
- Keeping employees happy. Employees who feel valued by the business – and whose needs are met – are more engaged and productive. Providing essential electric charging for employees demonstrates a responsive and committed employer.
- Demonstrating environmental commitment and supporting brand values. Social responsibility is key for businesses today and enabling greener transport is a crucial part of that. EV charging at the workplace sends a clear and visible message about where the business stands with respect to reducing the environmental impact of its operations and personnel.
- Improving efficiency and cutting costs. Electric charging points at work may make life easier for employees, reducing time spent seeking out where to charge, for example. For companies where vehicle fleets are part of the business there are opportunities to save on fuel and maintenance costs.
- Providing convenience for clients. Clients make decisions about which companies to partner with on the basis of a wide range of factors – and convenience is one of the most important. EV charging stations on the premises will be attractive as clients can simply fill up with charge while attending a meeting or site visit.
Energy prices will rise for millions of people across the UK in October, right at the start of the cold weather.
Regulator Ofgem said the price cap for default domestic energy deals would be raised to cover suppliers’ extra costs. The typical gas and electricity customer is likely to see their bill go up by £139 to £1,277 a year.

Over the summer holidays before the new school term in Liverpool, we were employed by Sefton Council to try and improve the energy consumption of Hillside High School in Bootle.
Sefton Council wanted to help Hillside High achieve their objectives of reducing energy costs and extending sustainability.
Hillside High School was formed in 1972 when two existing schools combined and formed the new school at the Breeze Hill site. Since it’s opening the facilities have been regularly updated. The science laboratories have been upgraded, ICT facilities have expanded rapidly and the school has installed a state of the art system of cabling to make the best possible use of the Sefton Learning Grid and broadband access. The school wanted to continue this progression by updating their lighting.
Installation of LED lighting throughout the school.
LED lights reduce maintenance, expenditure and improve light output. This offers a brighter environment for both pupils and staff.
These works were completed during the school holidays, to have the least impact on the school term in Liverpool and the staff and pupils.
We replaced 1038 fittings using Ansell LED fittings.
As a result of our work at Hillside High, we received data from Sefton Council regarding the energy consumption.
This graph shows the half hourly rate for electric at Hillside High -Comparing 5th Sept last year (in blue) to 5th Sept this year (in green) It’s clear to see the impact of our work. We couldn’t be happier and results like these speak for themselves.
Hillside High are delighted with the outcome of the work completed. This cost effective solution to lowering energy consumption has had a massive saving on the bills, reducing consumption by almost 50%.
A job well done by all.
The Results of the Installation…
Bright Classrooms, allowing pupils to work effectively whatever the weather outside.
A Sports Hall with lighting to compliment any sport.
A Dining Hall fit for all.
A Library to allow study at all times of the day.

So, what is the EV Homecharge Scheme? Each year, the number of electric vehicles on the roads in the UK rises. By 2020 it is predicted that over one million electric vehicles will be on the road. However, this means the number of electric vehicle chargers available to use on the roads will have to increase six-fold. The UK’s current target policy is to insist that by 2040, all new cars and vans sold in the UK should be zero emissions capable – that means battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric or hydrogen. In order to meet these targets the number of accessible chargers needs to increase. The availability of accessible and affordable charging options is the key to increasing the uptake of plug-in vehicles in the UK. That is why the government have various schemes available for both domestic and commercial premises.
EV Homecharge Scheme
It comes as no surprise that most plug-in vehicle owners will carry out the largest proportion of their charging at home. Some Electric Car owners say they are put off having an EV charger installed at home due to the price. However, the government currently has the EV Homecharge Scheme, which is designed to help people cover the cost of purchasing an electric charge point. Each household/eligible vehicle owner is entitled to a contribution of up to 75% towards the cost of one charge point, to a maximum of £500 (including VAT).
Having a home charger will end up saving you money. The average cost to fully charge your car is just over £3. For example, to fully charge a 30kWh Nissan LEAF overnight will cost about £3.96 Whereas, if you were to use a rapid charging point, typically found at service stations, it generally costs about £6.50 for a 30-minute charge. A home charger is also far more convenient too. Charging points have not yet been installed in every service station and supermarket, in fact, currently, only 3% of supermarkets have chargers, this means you can spend a large amount of time driving around to find a charger.
There are several different styles and brands of Electric Vehicle chargers to choose from in the scheme. The full list is available of the gov.uk site.
Workplace EV Charging Scheme
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme that provides support towards the up-front costs of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charge-points, for eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations. The scheme allows eligible applicants to claim 75% of the purchase and installation costs of a commercial EV charger, up to a maximum of £500 per install. You can claim for up 20 commercial EV chargers across all sites.
Having an EV charger at your business can benefit your business in many different ways. For example, having an EV charger for public use installed at your business premises could be a very lucrative investment. Many EV charger providers have chargers specifically designed for commercial properties, thus having the option to have a ‘Pay as You Go’ feature installed. This will bring a new stream of revenue to your business.
If your business is eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme you can only redeem your vouchers with an authorised installer and can only install charge point models which are approved by OLEV.
The full range of eligible workplace charge points is available on the gov.uk website.
It’s been a month of awards for Feed It Green and its staff; our solar panel repair engineers in Liverpool have garnered a few new achievements and accreditations! We’ve been rushed off our feet here, completing various assessments and courses for different organisations. We are very pleased that we can finally say that Feed It Green as a business and their staff have passed every single test, course and assessment!

Feed It Green has passed it’s MCS Assessment
The MCS is a nationally recognised quality assurance scheme, supported by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). It provides the framework for the certification of micro-generation technologies used to produce electricity and heat from low carbon sources.
They have recently launched a nationwide campaign of independent site inspections to evaluate how customer protection is being assured. The inspections will assist with monitoring compliance of MCS standards, assessing the effectiveness of standards and reviewing how they support the consumer journey as well as reviewing technical compliance. In order to pass the assessment, each business must prove that they are compliant with the latest industry standards for each criterion of the assessment!
We are proud to announce that Feed It Green has officially passed its MCS inspection! This means that we not only meet the industry standards, but we have exceeded them!
Patrick has passed his IPAF Course and his SMSTS Course
